Orthopedic beds and mattresses
Bed buying tips
If you are buying an orthopaedic bed to alleviate back pain, lumbar discomfort, aching joints, or any other medical complaint, speak to your doctor first and take any advice that he or she offers.
Check list
- Select a price range or budget figure that you can afford.
- Speak to friends and colleagues and find out what kind of bed they sleep on and what they think of it.
- Look at the different constructions of bed type available and (if possible) test each one to see how it feels. This should include the various sprung systems, memory foam, latex foam and composite beds. You may also wish to consider an air bed.
- Give careful thought to be size. If there are two of you, select a Queen size or bigger rather than a regular double. Also decide jointly on which type of bed suits you both.
- Check manufacturers and on-line retailers’ return conditions. Many on-line bed retailers offer money back guarantees, or trial periods to allow for the fact that you cannot test their beds in a showroom. These are usually good ways of ensuring that your purchase is made with security.
- Check out a number of outlets for price. You will usually find that the best deals can be had on-line. The links on this site should give you plenty to go at, but always compare prices and specifications by different retailers.
- Be aware that memory foam beds and mattresses are heavier than their traditional counterparts. Also, the more expensive the bed, the more robust and heavy will be its construction. Ensure that the delivery includes setting up the bed in its actual location. This may otherwise prove a problem.
- Consider your own sleep patterns and likes and dislikes when choosing a bed. E.g. Memory foam “sleeps warm”, memory and latex foam are more suitable (generally) for those with allergies and low beds can be difficult to get in and out of.
- Look at the construction of the bed. If it is memory foam, does it have multiple layers? Does one of those layers have a ventilation function etc. Research you bed purchase carefully, it is an important and health conscious decision.
- Try to decide if you like a really firm bed, or one that profiles itself to your body shape. There is no right or wrong bed, simply one that suits you and your sleep patterns.
- Finally, spend as much as you can on your bed, it is a purchase that has a direct impact on your health and well being now and in the future.
