Orthopedic beds and mattresses

Bed and mattress care

Beds should always be cared for in accordance with their manufacturers instructions and it should always be born in mind that looking after a bed and mattress properly will extend its life.

Orthopedic beds and mattress, and those made of memory foam, latex, or multi-material composites all have different care requirements. It should never be assumed that the way that you treat one mattress is appropriate for all – different mattresses require different treatments.

Typical care

Many mattresses benefit from regular turning, but this is not always true, particularly in the case of multi layer mattresses where there may be a "right way" and "wrong way”" up. Always check the manufactures care details, they may also affect any long term warranty or product guarantee.

Some of these mattresses have specific layers aimed at providing insulation, ventilation, or base firmness, so reversing them will detract from the mattresses performance.

Many mattresses and beds can benefit from vacuuming, but again this should be checked with the manufacturers guidelines first.

Mattresses and sheets can also benefit from being aired during the day (i.e. pulling the sheet or quilt back).

Few mattresses like being doubled up or folded, although some memory foam toppers do arrive packed this way. Even so, once placed on a bed a mattress should be maintained in its natural position for its lifetime.
