Pine bed
When it comes to bed frames the pine frame is still probably the most popular frame in Europe. For one thing the material is comparatively cheap and readily available, and for another it offers the style and natural feel of wood. It is also harvested from a renewable source that can be grown very quickly. The main alternative to timber is cast iron
For many people a pine bed frame is the only option that they will accept and with its naturally light colour it blends in neutrally with almost any décor. Pine frames can also be painted, unlike hardwood frames.
Pine bed styles
Pine beds come in almost every style conceivable from the plain to the elaborate.
The most basic, simple and cheap of bed frames are usually made from pine (this can include self assembly) and the most expensive of full canopy four poster beds can also be crafted from the pine wood.
The most common design of pine bed frame is the comparatively simple, ergonomic and simplistic looking frames often associated with the countries of Northern Europe like Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland. These are the countries from which much of the seasoned pine wood originates and their designs are often considered to be the classics for this particular type of wood. Many of these designs have been around for centuries.
More often than not pine bed frames have fairly large section timbers with simple connections and plain head and foot boards. The appearance of the light pine wood is considered to be a feature in itself and simplicity of design is one of their strengths.
Very few pine frames display detailed turning or carpentry features. If you want a very ornate design then you need to consider the hard woods which lend themselves far more easily to these styles and designs. Because pine is relatively cheap, very few manufacturers use the material for their higher priced products.
Buying pine beds
Pine beds and pine bed frames are widely available both online and in stores. Many are either self assembly or capably of being disassembled if required and this makes them easy to transport or store.
From a price comparison perspective, the pine bed is generally the cheapest wooden bed available in places like the UK and mainland Europe. The only wood-based option that hits a lower budget is the particle board or MDF frame, however this material needs coating or surface treating and cannot display the grain and features of real wood.
Always check that the depth of the mattress that you intend to fit onto your pine bed is suitable for the bed frame and be aware that orthopedic mattresses are often thicker (deeper) than standard mattresses. This means that most orthopedic beds will be deeper and higher than their standard equivalents.
