Single divan bed
A single divan will normally be 3 feet wide and this width, combined with the length and depth of the divan, opens up the possibility to have a lot of under-bed storage. A double divan bed can have up to 4 drawers.
Drawer formats
Some divan manufacturers offer a bed that has a single drawer at the foot of the bed,
however this is not usually a popular option because it limits the amount of under-bed space that can be utilized. It can also be a problem in smaller rooms where opening a bed end drawer may not be practical because of space restrictions.
The most popular drawer option is to have either one or two drawers opening to one side of the bed. No manufacturer (to our knowledge) offers one drawer on either side of a single divan bed.
The choice of whether or not to have a single drawer or two drawers will be determined by the amount of storage space that the buyer wants to gain from the under bed area. A single drawer will always be towards the foot of the bed and this will be the larger of any pair of drawers. A second drawer is normally positioned towards the head end of the bed, however this drawer is smaller and set-in from the top of the bed to prevent its opening being prevented by any adjacent bedside cabinet.
In the case of single divan beds some manufacturers will supply the divan in a “handed” format, i.e. with the drawers on either the left or right hand side.
Divan appearance and mattress
The standard appearance of a divan bed is to have a matching fabric covering both the divan base and the mattress. This is one of the appeals of this bed design.
Some divans do have a wood or melamine finish to their drawer fronts and the handles or pulls on the drawer fronts will also vary based on cost.
The types of mattress available with a divan bed will normally determine the price structure of the bed. Cheap economy divans will have standard springs, whilst the more expensive beds may have pocket springs, visco elastic memory foam,, latex foam etc.
Orthopedic beds can also be of the divan variety. The sleeping quality of the bed is primarily determined by the mattress and many orthopedic beds now come in the divan format for reasons of practicality. Mattresses with a composite, or multi material, construction often have a divan bed base.
