Mattress ticking
When buying a new bed or mattress, it is important to consider the ticking as this material plays a significant role in the overall comfort and life of the bed.
Mattress ticking is the material that is used to cover a mattress. It is the part of the mattress that comes into direct contact with the human body and it is particularly significant with natural latex and some memory foam mattresses.
Cheap ticking can make a mattress feel warm or sweaty, and although it may result in a less pricey mattress, it rarely results in a good quality one. Cheap ticking cannot be compensated for by expensive bed sheets.
Ticking for Latex and memory foam beds
- Both Latex and memory foam mattresses have an elastic nature that, unlike a regular mattress, requires the ticking to stretch and mould around the material without creases, folds or stress. For this reason, the right kind of ticking is every bit as important as the quality of the mattress itself.
Poor, or cheap, ticking can be uncomfortable and it can also have a long term wearing affect on a material like latex which is easily damaged and requires a degree of protection.
With a Latex (and some memory) foam mattresses, the best fabric to have as ticking is a stretch knit organic cotton. This material is comfortable and it also enhances the natural performance of the latex. With natural Latex in particular, man-made fibre ticking, whilst saving you money, is not a good idea.
